Achilles Tendon Treatment For Runners - Client Marathon Success Story

Published by Greg Campbell
Achilles Tendon Pain Common In Runners
Meet Nathan. A keen runner who races in marathons all over the world. Well that was until he picked up a frustrating injury in his right Achilles Tendon and also his lower back. He came to see me as he had the Zurich Marathon booked but he didn’t think he would be able to run it.
Achilles Tendon Injury Assessment
Nath booked his physiotherapy assessment to identify the root cause of the issue. I identified he had picked up an Achilles Tendinopathy which due to the pain was causing him to compensate when he ran - leading to lower back pain.
Achilles Injury Treatment
With Nath we used a variety of different methods to help his symptoms. We did some soft tissue massage for his calf and lower back initially to help the pain. However, soft tissue massage on its own would not get Nath back to running the marathon. This is because Nath’s body could not tolerate the load of running so we had to build up his body’s capacity to run.
To do this we got Nath on a strengthening programme tailored to his weaknesses in his right leg and lower back. This consisted of exercises such as calf raises, dead lifts, leg extensions and hamstring curls.
Physiotherapy Success
The outcome… Nath ran a PB in the Zurich Marathon with his first ever sub 3:00:00 marathon. He has also just completed a marathon in South Africa running in the wilderness surrounded by wild animals.
